The newest installment of the Insidious Franchise came out on August 21 in theaters carrying a lot of mixed reviews. The story continues after the previous movie, Insidious: The Red Door, and follows Gemma Hall, a single mother who has dealt with many supernatural events, including the sudden death of her mother. Gemma finds out that she has a rare spiritual ability to travel in and out of The Further, which is a dark supernatural world filled with the tormented and evil spirits. But when a malicious cult leader targets Gemma and her daughter, Maya, to fulfill his goal of bringing the spirits of The Further into the human dimension, they, alongside some allies, must find a way to banish the spirits back to The Further.

With a IMDB rating of 6.1/10, the movie was about as I expected. The movie followed a very basic horror movie plot that made it rather easy to predict. The only saving graces, in my opinion, were the visual effects (FX) that looked incredibly realistic, and the music that allowed the jump-scares to have enough tension to create a reaction from the audience. The pacing was inconsistent throughout the film. Being incredibly slow in the beginning with too many added details in an attempt to deepen the already basic plot, to being very rushed at the climax to the resolution that made the movie seem to have a mishap in the planning.

While the movie might not be to my tastes, the movie wasn’t horrible in the way that I can never watch it again, but rather missed the marks at many points that deflated the movie’s meaning. As an outsider to the franchise, I am rather disappointed in the movie and it will most likely not be on my re-watch list, but the movie did have its good moments.
